Public ArtInspire Clay Cross! Residents are being asked for their views of Clay Cross past, present and future – to inspire public art being created as part of a massive regeneration scheme. Artist Peter Maris has been commissioned by developers, GMI Property Company, to produce artwork which will fit into the town’s £22m New Bridge Street regeneration scheme. People will be invited to work alongside Peter in a series of workshops being held in the new year – putting forward their memories of Clay Cross, their views of the town at present and their aspirations for the future It is just one of many opportunities for people to get involved as part of an ongoing community consultation about the public art project, which is a partnership between GMI and North East Derbyshire District Council. Cllr Peter Riggott, NEDDC’s Member Champion for the Clay Cross regeneration, said: “Clay Cross has got some great heritage – from its famous connections to George Stephenson and its mining past. “We want to hear people’s memories but, just as importantly, we want the artwork to take inspiration from people’s views of the town as it is today, and what residents want for the future. “We hope people from across the community get involved to help create relevant and modern public art for Clay Cross that people can be proud of.” Dates for the workshops will be announced soon. In the meantime, people can put forward their ideas via our online consultation. Peter, who has a background in sculpture, added: “We don’t want the word ‘art’ to put people off getting involved. “It doesn’t matter if someone doesn’t normally paint, draw or sculpt – we just want people to get involved, enjoy being part of the project and share their ideas.” |
