Development of Bridge Street
What's the background?
The Bridge Street area is an important gateway into town.
It is made up of varied industrial premises which are widely spread out, and the boundaries between them look untidy.
When the GMI town centre project is complete, Bridge Street will become a ‘shop window’ for
Clay Cross, and will be well used as a throughroute for people visiting the supermarket.
This provides an ideal opportunity for this industrial area to regenerate - and creates an excellent ‘high street’ location where businesses can grow to serve this new market.
What's happened so far?
Good progress has been made on two key developments immediately adjacent to Bridge Street - the GMI project to create a new Tesco supermarket, affordable homes, bus station and other developments, and also the former Biwater (now Silkston) site, which will include new homes, recreational facilities and business premises.
What's proposed?
- Keep the area as a focus for employment in Clay Cross, that builds a reputation focused on manufacturing, service industries and possibly creative businesses.
- To prioritise boundary and building improvements on Bridge Street, to improve the attractiveness of this important gateway into Clay Cross.
- Use new lighting, paving and seating to boost the area’s image, and to create a well designed place where people feel safe. Also introduce new greenery where possible.
- More densely populate the area with business premises to improve the use of land and reduce ‘wasted’ space which can become untidy.
- Create new road links to improve access into Bridge Street.
