Clay Cross Civic and Amenity Centre
What's the Background?
Clay Cross Community Hospital and Sharley Park Leisure Centre provide an important hub facing on to Market Street, neighboured by a number of other health and community buildings.
There is an opportunity to make better use of the available buildings, while improving the links
between them to create an easily accessible ‘centre’ of community facilities. In combination
with family and sports activities in the town’s parks, these public amenities share an important role at the heart of Clay Cross.
What's happened so far?
The public organisations which own these community buildings – which includes North East Derbyshire District Council, Clay Cross Parish Council, Derbyshire County Council and Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust – are working together to consider how the sites could be better integrated in the future.
What's proposed?
- Use a ‘campus’ style development to link a range of community buildings and public amenities – connecting opportunities for exercise, leisure and play with health services in the town.
- Carry out an audit of the existing buildings to look at how well the properties are suited to their current use – for example, car parking provision and location.
- Use the findings of the audit to map how new facilities could best fit into the town – identifying areas for new build projects, and the best use of existing buildings.
- In the longer term, use these facilities to help launch annual sporting or heritage events – strengthening the profile of Clay Cross and pulling visitors into the town.
