The Parks

What's the background?

Kenning Park, Clay Cross

The three parks - Sharley, Egstow and Kenning - are a valuable community asset, rarely found in a town the size of Clay Cross:

  • Sharley Park contains the leisure centre, hospital, new primary school, playgrounds and a number of care facilities. In addition, it also provides important pedestrian routes from residential areas to these amenities, as well as the town centre.

  • Egstow Park acts as a ‘buffer’ between Clay Cross and Tupton, made up of agricultural land and sports facilities. It is well connected to the long distance footpath network, with links to the Five Pits Trail.

  • Kenning Park is a country park overlooking the Derbyshire Dales and is well connected to the rural footpath network. There is scope to extend the park up to Clay Lane, improving access from the town centre.

What's proposed?

Public footpath signpost.
A family-friendly Sharley Park
Define clear pedestrian routes and gateways into this area – creating a safe and attractive environment for the community to enjoy.

A sports-focused Egstow Park
Build on the sports facilities that already exist in the park, linking up with amenities available at Tupton Hall School and Sharley Park Leisure Centre.

A pull for tourists: Kenning Park
Maximise the potential of this area as a tourist site and consider new attractions which could  be included here – such as a sculpture park, café and amphitheatre for outdoor performances.
