What's the background?
Clusters of small independent traders characterise business in Clay Cross – a feature which can be enhanced to create a distinctive market town for the 21st century.
Traffic congestion is a problem, there are no communal public spaces and the town ‘centre’ can feel disjointed. In tackling all three of these issues there is an ideal opportunity to redefine the centre of Clay Cross.
Meanwhile, the former school site on Market Street is now available for redevelopment following the creation of the new
Sharley Park Community Primary School. This represents an important regeneration opportunity in the heart of the town centre.
What's happened so far?
Subject to the outcome of a public inquiry work on the major retail-led scheme along Bridge Street, development is expected to start in Autumn 2009.
This £22m project by developers GMI Rovinian will be a massive catalyst for the overall regeneration of the town centre, creating a new Tesco supermarket, retail units, affordable housing, health centre, bus station and link road from the A61 – along with hundreds of jobs.
What's proposed?
- Use the GMI Rovinian development to pull further investment into neighbouring Market Street and High Street - improving or redeveloping commercial premises to make sure these areas make the most out of the new interest Clay Cross will attract.
- Tie in new housing, commercial premises and the creation of a market square on the former schools site with a comprehensive redevelopment of the town centre.
- Support independent businesses to thrive within a distinctive town centre, and consider the creation of cultural attractions - such as a theatre or heritage centre - to set Clay Cross aside from similar towns.
