Questions and answers about the regeneration of Clay CrossWe've put together a few questions and answers about the regeneration of Clay Cross, click on a link to find out more. Not what you were wanting to know? Click here to ask a new question What is the overall vision for Clay Cross? Plans for the ambitious 17-acre scheme, the size of 20 football pitches, include enhanced shopping facilities, road improvements and a new bus station. These plans have been developed over a number of years and are about to enter the final phase to allow work to start. I live in Clay Cross, how will these plans affect me? Well, there'll a new set of facilities available for you to use, including:
Planning permission has been granted for all of these improvements. As well as this town centre scheme, we are also working on a 'masterplan' which will look at improving the environment of the town centre, enhancing landscaping, adding new seating areas as well as a comprehensive regeneration of the wider area of Clay Cross. Will there be a reduction in traffic? Traffic congestion in Clay Cross is currently a major problem making it difficult for pedestrians and shoppers. Heavy traffic flows through narrow roads and streets also bring problems of pollution, noise, accidents and vehicle delays. Under the proposals the Bridge Street link will improve traffic circulation round the town taking vehicles away from part of Market Street and improving pedestrian access to existing facilities and the new retail development. The scheme also includes a bus station which will bring public transport closer to the town centre. Why Clay Cross? We have consulted widely to gauge public opinion about facilities in Clay Cross and to find out why trade in the town is so poor. One of the main reasons was the lack of a major food superstore. As a result, people have chosen to take their trade to other supermarkets, affecting the vitality and viability of the town centre as a whole. We believe the provision of a major superstore together with good parking provision will bring lost trade back into Clay Cross and stimulate other businesses to move into the area. Clay Cross currently presents a poor commercial and shopping image with a large area of unused grassland at its centre giving the town a run-down, unattractive appearance. We want to remove spoil tips and remnants of former mine workings to help enhance the environment and improve the appearance of the town centre. The scheme will also create significant job opportunities for local people in an area suffering from unemployment. We will work to ensure that local people have the chance to benefit from these new jobs. CPO stands for a Compulsory Purchase Order, CPOs have been issued to 42 properties that will be affected by the development. The scheme cannot take place without the demolition of these properties and we are working with tenants and owners to help them to relocate. Full details of the Compulsory Purchase Order can be seen on the North East Derbyshire website or you can view a hard copy at the Council House, Saltergate, Chesterfield. Ask Us A Question
